"Do You Know Me?" - A Digital Performance Episode in Celebration of Pennsylvania Black History

Sankofa African American Theatre Company in partnership with Gamut Theatre Group (3).png

“Do You Know Me?” is an original digital performance episode by Sharia Benn. Combining history and drama, the piece takes us on a journey through poetry, letters, and the underground railroad, highlighting the words of influential local and national African American leaders. “Do You Know Me?” connects student audiences to Harrisburg's rich history of abolitionists and civil rights activists who worked to end slavery, secure the vote, and challenge the segregation that continues to plague our communities. The episode features local student talent, as well as professional artists to breathe life into poetry, interviews, speeches, and letters that are all a part of our local and national history. By sharing this truthful knowledge of culture, history, and identity, students gain a better understanding of the past so that they can be better agents for social change in the future. The project is a partnership with Sankofa African American Theatre Company and Gamut Theatre Group and sponsored by the Dauphin County Commissioners and Highmark Blue Shield.

Gamut Theatre’s Virtual Shakespeare Engagement Tour

The Challenge

Gamut Theatre knows what a challenging school year it will be.  Whether conducting classes in person, online, or a combination of both; finding quality, cultural experiences for students will be challenging.  Gamut is here to help.  Since 2003, Gamut Theatre/Harrisburg Shakespeare Company has been providing Shakespeare Educational Engagement plays that are exciting, accessible versions of Shakespeare’s most famous works edited to run under 90 minutes.  Gamut has been praised by students, teachers, and administrators for its excellence and ability to relate to all ages, while keeping in its mission to tell classic stories in new and exciting ways.

The Solution

While it is neither safe nor prudent to bring groups of students together to view a live production, Gamut is offering new online programming for the classroom with Julius Caesar Goes Digital.  Using its highly popular 2018-19 production of Julius Caesar, the creative minds at Gamut Theatre have crafted a virtual program to engage students and spark discussion.

The Cost

Julius Caesar Goes Digital full education package (includes one free 1-hour LIVE workshop on Zoom) - $350 per school

Additional workshops for groups of up to 30 students - $200 each

Julius Caesar Goes Digital package includes:

· Five (5) digital episodes that recreate Gamut’s past production of Julius Caesar as told through photos and voiceovers.  Each episode runs 15-20 minutes (perfect length for classroom instruction) and features an introduction by Gamut Executive Director, Melissa Nicholson.  Melissa directed the 2018-19 production and poses questions before each episode that can be used as discussion points.

· PDF of the Gamut script that is used in the episodes: an edited version of Shakespeare’s text that ran 80 minutes when performed live.

· PDF of a Study Guide to be used in concert with the episodes to dive into a deeper examination of the play.

· Access to Gamut’s production of Caesar in Rome, a unique digital performance combining famous monologues from the play with a travelogue that includes footage of modern-day Rome as presented by certified Roman tour guide, Vincenzo Macchiarola, that highlights where these events actually took place.

· One (1) 1-hour LIVE workshop and Q&A for one class of up to 30 students, conducted by Gamut Theatre Artistic Director, Clark Nicholson, accompanied by Gamut’s professional actors through Zoom webinar.  (Additional workshops available to accommodate multiple classes.)

The Advantage of Working with a Professional Theatre Company

William Shakespeare’s works are great pieces of literature, however, first and foremost, they were written as plays intended to be seen and heard as performed by actors.  As our student audiences see and hear the play, albeit digital, the language that seemed archaic on the page suddenly springs to life, and sparks their interest in Shakespeare.

However, seeing the play is not enough. Students learn best from being involved. By actively engaging the students during our specially designed workshops, as well as Q&A, Gamut educates students on the literary genius of William Shakespeare while introducing them to basic techniques of classical acting. Our goal is to make Shakespeare accessible to students by providing them with the opportunity to approach his work from a theatrical point of view. Students are able to see characters as more than just words on a page, but rather, as human beings possessing the same desires and fears as they possess. The results are compelling and exciting!
